This is perfect for the serious Trekker who cannot make a decision between a Nature trek in the High Andes and the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu – this has the best of both worlds. We begin on the Salkantay Trek, then change paths just before the Salkantay Pass and hike over the Incachiriaska Pass (Frozen Inca Pass) instead, leading down to the village of ‘Wayllabamba’ which joins with the Classic Inca Trail and heads to Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate. We will Trek from the watershed of the Apurimac River to the Urubamba River and around Salkantay Mountain, which is the second highest mountain in the Cusco region (6,277m/20,577ft). The trail twists and turns as we hike up and down through high mountain ranges, misty cloud forest, awesome landscapes and many diverse ecological zones containing a wide variety of plants and bird life. This stone path passes through ancient archaeological sites and leads us to the great finale we have all been waiting for – Machu Picchu.
Morning pick up from your hotel for a 3.5 hour private transfer towards Soraypampa where the starting point of the trek will be. Along the way have views of Iscuchaca and Limatambo. See the beautiful valley and the snow capped mountain of Salkantay.
When we arrive have breakfast at the trailhead at Soraypampa enjoying the the view of Humantay (5,900m/19,356ft) and Salkantay (6,217m/20,396ft) mountain glaciers. Begin trekking to see the turquoise colored lake, Humantay. Later continue trekking to our first campsite Salkantaypampa. On arriving we will have high tea and snacks while enjoying the stunning views of Salkantay.
Wake up to a fresh air and hot breakfast, preparing ourselves for our second trek till the top. We will ascend for the first few hours. Stop to have lunch prepared by our wonderful chef. After getting fueled, continue our trek for another 3 hours before reaching our campsite, located just 1km away from the snow capped mountain of Salkantay.
Once we arrive at our third campsite, it’s tea time and of course snacks while mesmerising the stunning glacial lakes and valleys. We will have a delicious dinner and call it a night.
We will begin our day with a hike to the Incachiriaska Pass this will take approximately 4 hours hike (4,880m16,010ft) Hopefully we will see the majestic Andean Condor. This site is a sacred part of the ancient Inca religion. After the wonderful experience with wonderful views, head down to our campsite at Sisaypampa.
Waking up with a brilliant view and fresh air and to top it off a hot breakfast served with coffee and tea, what a great way to start the day. Today we begin with hiking towards the end of the valley. Which leads into a valley called Pampacahua, where we will find an Inca Canal that is still used by the local farming settlements.
At the end of the Pampacahua Valley, pass our first Inca ruins called Paucarcancha before arriving to Wayllabamba for lunch. Walk for another 3 hours through the Llullucha Valley to reach our campsite at Llulluchapampa, where we enjoy our afternoon tea and dinner, while taking in the peaceful scenery.
Early breakfast call to get energized to start a 2 hours climb along the original Inca stone path. Hike up to Warmiwañusqa pass (4,217m/14,047ft), have a magnificent view of the surrounding area. Later, head downhill on a reconstructed Inca Trail to the Pacaymayu River and have lunch.
After a delicious lunch and a well deserved rest, walk again for another 2 hours to Runcurakay Pass (3,977m/13,127ft). From this vantage point, enjoy the views of all the surrounding mountains before going down again for 3 more hours to Phuyupatamarca (3,650m/12,047ft), where we spend the night.
We will have an early breakfast as always while enjoying the sun rise over the Urubamba valley, the Machu Picchu Mountain and the stunning Inca site. Walk downhill after for another 2 hours through the cloud forest to the archaeological site of Wiñay Wayna where we will have lunch.
From Winay Wayna walk an hour towards the Sun Gate and get our first breathtaking view of Machu Picchu, a great spot for taking photos. Once we reach Machu Picchu, take many photos from the viewpoint and then take the shuttle bus down the zigzagging hillside for 25 minutes to Aguas Calientes. Here we spend the night in a nice comfortable hotel with a warm bed and take a hot shower!
Todays breakfast will be at your hotel, get an early bus at 5:30am up to Machu Picchu just in time to witness the sunrise. It is a truly mystical place and not something you’ll want to miss! After enjoying the sunrise your guide will provide a tour of Machu Picchu, which takes around two hours. See many of the most important parts of Machu Picchu Citadel during your tour.
When you have had your fill of the incredible views of Machu Picchu, take a bus back down to Aguas Calientes. Upon arriving at Aguas Calientes lunch is waiting in one of the numerous restaurants (lunch not included). Depending on your train departure time, there may be some time for shopping, or sightseeing.

The weather is very unpredictable and always changing in the Andes Mountains, so it is difficult to say with any certainty. We recommend that you be prepared for warm weather, possible rain showers (Orange Nation provides rain ponchos) and a warm jacket in case of cold. We also recommend that you dress in layers so you may take off or put on clothes as needed.
The climate in Cusco has temperatures between 10º – 20º C, with warm days and cold nights. The best time to hike the Inca trail is between the months of April through October, when the weather is warm. During the months of June, July and August nights are very cold which is why Orange Nation rents good quality 4 season sleeping bags.
The rainy season is during the months of November through March, if you want to hike the Inca Trail during this season, bring warm clothes and be prepared for rain but there will be a beautiful landscape and colorful flowers.
The month of February, the Inca Trail is closed for safety, repairs and restoration.
The Average weather conditions on the Inca Trail:
Welcome to Cusco, the capital of the Inca Empire, located at 11,152 feet (3,399 meters) above sea level, where lack of oxygen is the only thing that can prevent you from enjoying your trip. Don’t waste one day feeling sick, prevent high altitude sickness before your trip to Cusco.
For some visitors, the first hours in Cusco can be summarized as: shortness of breath, a discomfort in the body, dizziness, headaches, stomachaches, even vomiting. As great connoisseurs of natural medicine, the Incas used coca leaves to counteract soroche, quechua for high-altitude sickness.
If you travel from Lima to Cusco, the effect can be immediate. This lack of oxygen, scientifically known as hypoxia, begins to manifest itself at 7,874 ft (2,399 m) above sea level. That’s why right after landing in Cusco, visitors can feel fatigued and have difficulty walking. Walking one block could feel like walking ten blocks carrying a backpack full of rocks. It is advisable to take it really easy on the first day and, if possible, rest the first few hours to help the body acclimatize to the altitude.
To start out on the right foot, avoiding traveling to Cusco with a hangover (this is fundamental so that the body does not become even more dehydrated). Many of the symptoms one feels are the same as those of an almighty hangover, even if you did not drink the night before traveling. It’s also recommended that you abstain from drink alcohol on the first day in Cusco.
How do people feel after a night of drinking? Thirsty. That’s how you’ll feel when you arrive in Cusco. As already stated, the body dehydrates quickly in high altitudes. It is recommended you drink lots of water before and during your trip to Cusco. Also, avoid heavy meals since your stomach takes longer to digest food at high altitudes. A diet of low proteins and high carbs is advisable.
No one knew better the effects of high altitude than indigenous peoples. Coca is the best natural medicine to combat altitude sickness. It was even considered sacred because of its curative powers and is still used in the same way now as it was in the time of the Incas. It contains iron, vitamins A, B1, B2 and calcium, among other nutrients. Coca makes it easier for your bloodstream to absorb oxygen, suppresses hunger, combats fatigue, headaches and can ease your stomach. If you do not feel like chewing leaves (which can be bitter, apart from numbing your mouth), you can try drinking coca tea, which is most commonly found in the lobby of hotels in Cusco.
There’s one magic pill that will save you many of these troubles. It is called Sorojchi Pill and it contains acetylsalicylic acid, salophen and caffeine. This over-the-counter drug will help with your blood circulation and headache. If you’re feeling dizzy and nauseous, try Gravol, an over-the-counter pill to stop motion sickness. Take both pills an hour before landing in Cusco. Remember to consult your doctor about medicines you intend to take, and always read the labels.
Still feeling sick? Don’t worry, the body will eventually get used to the altitude and symptoms will gradually subside. Plus, if you’re traveling to Machu Picchu, remember it’s lower than Cusco, which means more oxygen!

The evening before your trek, you will be given a SMALL DUFFLE BAG to pack your clothes for the next four days. Your weight allowance is up to 7kg/15lbs including sleeping bag, so 5kg/11lbs. Your team of porters will carry your duffle bag for you, together with the food and camping gear. It’s important to be aware that you will not have access to your items in the duffle bag until the end of each day, as the porters will always be ahead of the group. During the trek, you need a day backpack big enough to carry your personal belongings such as a warm jacket, a rain jacket, camera, sunscreen, snacks, water, etc. Usually a 30 to 50 litre backpack is sufficient.
The Classic Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is a 42km (24.4 mile) hike through the Andes in the Cusco region. The maximum altitude on the trek is 4,217m/13,907ft. On the second day of the trek we climb two mountains. The Trail is a fairly difficult and you should be prepared and healthy prior to starting. You have to be relatively fit and exercise regularly.
In preparation: try walking 15kms in a day or go to the fitness club in the months leading up to the trek. It is also important to be well acclimatised to the altitude. Try to spend at least 2 days in Cusco (3,350m/11,047ft) prior to starting the trek.

Trip to Rainbow mountain. First to the mountain thanks to Yair’s expert driving and special thanks to Cristian for being my guide. Highly recommend!
Our group of 8 did the 3-day Inca trail tour. From the very beginning Ray demonstrated his knowledge by answering all our questions thoroughly. Trekking the Inca trail was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do in my life. I can say for certain that I would not have finished the trail, if not for Ray. I am not active at all, and hiking up and down a mountain, for 7 hours, seemed impossible. Within the first 10 minutes I was ready to be done. That sentiment was shared within most of my group.
Our tour guide Ray was excellent and very helpful. And we did the short inks trail to machupicchu thanks for the experience
Ray was absolutely amazing 😎 would definitely recommend him to anyone that wants to travel to Machu Picchu !!! Best experience of my life and off my bucket list🙏🏾
This was my first time in Peru and I wanted to do something bigger and better than Machu Picchu. I was searching online and came across Orange Nation's "Choquequirao Trek to Machu Picchu" , which is three times larger than Machu Picchu. Since Peru is known for a Machu Picchu
